title row - ball  Round 4 Senior Report

1sts Vs The Basin at The Basin - A dissapointing day saw the 1st XI go down to The Basin by 44 runs.? Unfortunately failures from the top order bats last week left a bit to much work for the guys coming in later on.? Resuming the day at 7/47 chasing The Basin's 161 was always going to be tough, but the boys fought it out in true spirit.? Tim Binks and Rob Zsiga put together a great partnership to take the score past 100, and were the only two who offered any real resistance.? They gave the top order bats a great lesson in putting together a partnership and waiting for the loose ball to hit.? Rob fell for a well put together 19, and Binksy was the last wicket to fall for a gutsy 32.? In the end we were all out for 117.? There's no doubt the 1st's are going through a rough patch at the moment, but in the last couple of games we have seen glimpses of what this team is capable of.? Our task now is to work hard to get it all together and turn this season around, and there is no doubt we have the depth of? talent and desire to do just that.

2nds Vs The Basin at Home - After a great effort on week one we only needed 21 runs to seal a victory on the first innings, but we were not intent on just winning, we wanted an outright win and plans were put in place. After a steady start, Wokka (62) and Finchy (14) passed the total in the 8th over of the day. Things didn't go exactly to plan and quick runs were proving hard to get as Finchy was caught with the score on 118 and Wokka also caught for a great 62 with the score on 124. Nick Whitty (8) was bowled after a short stay at the crease which brought Burgo (13) and Stumpy (37) together with the score at 134. A quick fire partnership of 36 took the score to 170 with Stumpy hitting 7 boundaries in his score of 37 after a midweek tutorial from 'Super Coach' Pete Matthews and his video camera. Dave Smith (10) smacked two quick boundries and when Stumpy was bowled in the pursuit of quick runs we declared 8 wickets down for 194 leaving us 80 runs in front of the opposition and about 50 overs to bowl them out for the outright. A much improved batting effort with our highest score for the season.

Although 80 runs is not much to defend we got off to the best start possible when Stumpy had one of the openers caught by Tyson at point for 0 in his first over and then Dave Smith bowled an absolute beauty and executed our plan perfectly to the other opener to have him out for 0 in the very next over, The Basin 2/1. Stumpy got his second for innings when he had their no. 4 batsmen plumb LBW, 3/19. Bring on Shannon Whitty just before tea with immediate results with a wicket in his first over after a great catch by Pup in gully, , who was sub-fielding for Finchy, 4/21 and tea - what an effort. Buckers took his 7th for the match in his first over and the first over after tea with a LBW, 5/24. Shannon then had his second after a good catch by Smithy at short cover, 6/36 and the outright was really on the cards. The next wicket didn't fall until the score was on 61 when Dave Smith demolished the stumps of their no. 8, 7/61 and another bowled batsmen by Smithy not long after had the score at 8/79. Their captain hung around for some time, doing nothing in particular, and survived a number of confident appeals before Buckers had him caught behind with the score on 95, 9/95. Unfortunately we ran out of time and fell just short of an outright win but a super effort by everyone involved. The bowling and fielding was excellent and most importantly we came away with the win. Buckers sensational with 8/48 for the match and an great knock by Wokka of 62. Bring on Auravale..

3rds Vs Eildon Park at Eildon Park - We went into day 2 full of confidence after posting 204 the previous week.

Patto & Moray opened up the bowling & it didn’t take long for Patto to get the first wicket with only a few runs on the board.

A few overs later Patto had his second wicket after a juggled catch by Ed at 1st slip.

Moray then decided to get into the action having their number 4 caught ……………..an absolute blinder by Patto at short fine leg. 3/12.

Moray then got another breakthrough……their captain LBW and we were right on top with the score at 4/25 .

They then got a bit of a partnership going, so we decided to put the ball into the hands of young Sam Walsh.

It didn’t take long for Sammy to make the break & we were back on track at 5/67.

Sammy then chimed in with the next wicket, a ripsnorter off an inswinger that sent middle stump cartwheeling. 6/76

Sammy almost had another soon after that would have probably finished them, but it wasn’t to be. They got a partnership going that took them to tea at 6/103. The game was ours for the taking. ?

After the break we were looking for quick wickets and they were very lucky with a spilt chance in the 1st over after tea & several others that just eluded fielders. We finally made the breakthrough courtesy of Moray, caught by Donga in the gully 7/146 & right back in it. ? They got another little partnership growing as our pressure increased before Patto finally got another wicket 8/170.

From this point the game was very intense as both teams strove for victory. To their credit they were the team that got the job done on the day, passing us 8 down, but having to fight all the way.

Our poor fielding & our inability to consistently keep the ball on or outside off stump was a big factor as we gave away far too many free runs down the leg side.

We fought the game out really well but just need to keep the concentration levels up for the whole 80 overs if we are to be a force in this grade.

Some great performances on the day: Moray took 3/71 off 29 overs.? Patto took 3/56 off 23 overs. Sammy Walsh 2/19 off 7 overs. Griggy bowled really well without luck.

A special mention to the two young guns in our team Jason Matthews who made 96 & Sammy Walsh who made 75 not out in the juniors that morning.? It was a great effort by those 2 to back it up all day in the field. They did a terrific job for the team even though they must have been physically exhausted.

Next week we take on the top team (Knox) & we must step up if we want to take away a victory from this game..
